Glaucoma

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a serious eye condition that can damage the optic nerve, often due to elevated intraocular pressure. Left untreated, glaucoma can lead to gradual vision loss or even blindness. It’s one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide, but early detection and treatment can effectively manage it, preserving long-term eye health.

Types of Glaucoma:

  • Open-Angle Glaucoma: The most common type, it progresses slowly with no noticeable symptoms until peripheral vision starts to narrow.

  • Angle-Closure Glaucoma: A less common form that develops suddenly, causing severe eye pain, blurred vision, and nausea. This is a medical emergency.

  • Normal-Tension Glaucoma: Damage to the optic nerve occurs despite normal eye pressure, making regular eye exams essential.

Symptoms of Glaucoma:

Glaucoma is often known as the “silent thief of sight” because it develops with few symptoms initially. Advanced symptoms may include:

  • Loss of peripheral vision

  • Blurred vision or halos around lights

  • Severe eye pain (with angle-closure glaucoma)

Risk Factors for Glaucoma:

  • Age (40+)

  • Family history

  • High intraocular pressure

  • Health conditions like diabetes and hypertension

  • Long-term use of corticosteroids

Glaucoma Screening with Your Optometrist:

At Altitude Optometry, our optometrists in Gatineau use state-of-the-art equipment to assess eye health and detect early signs of glaucoma. We perform routine tests like OCT scans, visual field tests, and tonometry to evaluate intraocular pressure and the health of your optic nerve. A regular eye appointment is critical for catching glaucoma early and preserving vision.

Glaucoma Treatment Options:

Although glaucoma cannot be cured, it can be managed with appropriate treatment, which may include:

  • Eye Drops: Typically the first treatment to lower eye pressure.

  • Laser Therapy: Used to enhance fluid drainage or reduce its production.

  • Surgery: In advanced cases, surgery may be necessary to create a new drainage pathway.

The Importance of Regular Eye Appointments:

Since glaucoma often progresses without warning, regular eye appointments with your optometrist are essential, especially if you are at risk. Early detection is key to protecting eye health and preventing irreversible vision loss.
