Dry Eyes

What is dry eye?

Dry eye is a condition in which the eyes do not produce enough tears, or the tears are not of sufficient quality to moisturize and protect the surface of the eye. This can cause a burning sensation, stinging, and irritation.

Most common symptoms of dry eye

  • A sensation of having a foreign object, sand, or needles in the eye.

  • Blurred or distorted vision during prolonged tasks.

  • Frequent tearing when exposed to wind or cold.

  • Redness in the eyes.

  • Eye discomfort upon waking.

  • A tingling sensation in the eyes.

  • Sensitivity to light (photophobia).

  • Red or sensitive eyelids.

  • Frequent styes or chalazions.

Causes of dry eye

  • Meibomian gland dysfunction

  • Age and hormonal changes.

  • Prolonged screen time.

  • Certain medications.

  • Medical conditions such as diabetes.

  • Dry environments (air conditioning, heating, etc.)

How is dry eye treated?

Treatments vary depending on the severity of the symptoms and the underlying cause:

  • Artificial tears: Used to lubricate the eyes.

  • Heated eye mask

  • Corticosteroids as needed

  • Gels and ointments: Used at night to relieve dry eyes.

  • Tear plugs: Inserted into the tear ducts to help keep more tears on the surface of the eye.

  • Lifestyle changes: Take regular breaks when using screens, use a humidifier, and avoid overly dry environments.

Prevention and advice

  • Blink regularly, especially when looking at screens.

  • Avoid direct drafts (air conditioning, fans).

  • Consult your optometrist in Gatineau for a management plan tailored to your situation.
